Chimney Sweeping & Fireplace Services in Whangārei

Everything your wood burner, log burner or open fire needs to stay warm, cosy and safe — swept, checked and cared for by an NZHHA-certified local with 20+ years’ experience across Northland.

BJ Chimney Sweeping offers a full range of chimney and fireplace services across Whangārei and Northland — from a routine annual sweep to a top-to-bottom safety audit. Every job is owner-operated, insurance-approved and left spotless. Here’s what we do.

Chimney Sweeping & Cleaning

A chimney sweep clears the soot and creosote that build up inside your flue every time you light a fire. Using professional rods and brushes with careful dust control, we remove the flammable build-up that causes chimney fires and restore a clean, free-drawing flue — so your fire lights easily and burns hotter.

  • Full flue sweep for wood burners, log burners and open fires
  • Soot and creosote removed with professional equipment
  • Drop-sheets and dust control — we leave the room tidy
  • Recommended once a year, ideally before winter
  • Insurance-approved clean with a record for your policy

Chimney Safety Audit

Our safety audit is a proper inspection of everything that keeps your fire safe. While we sweep, we check the flue, firebox, door and seals for obstructions, deterioration and venting problems, then tell you plainly what we found and what (if anything) needs attention.

  • Flue checked for blockages, cracks and heavy creosote glaze
  • Firebox, baffle and grate inspected for wear
  • Door glass, seals and rope checked for a proper seal
  • Venting and draw assessed so the fire burns cleanly
  • Clear, honest report on anything worth fixing

Roof & Flashing Inspection

While we’re up top, we take a look at your cowl, cap and flashing for leaks or structural issues. It’s the part of your chimney most exposed to Northland weather, and small problems here are far cheaper to catch early than to fix after water damage.

  • Cowl and rain cap checked for damage or blockage
  • Flashing inspected for leaks around the penetration
  • Visible brick, flue and cap condition assessed
  • Early warning on issues before they let water in
  • Practical advice on what needs a roofer or builder

Wood & Log Burner Cleaning

We clean free-standing and inbuilt wood and log burners inside and out. Beyond the flue, we clear the firebox and baffle, wipe down the glass, and check the seals — so your burner looks after itself and runs at its best all winter.

  • Free-standing and inbuilt burners cleaned inside and out
  • Firebox, baffle and flue-way cleared of ash and build-up
  • Glass cleaned and door seals checked
  • Advice on baffle, firebricks or rope if they’re worn
  • Tips on burning dry wood for a cleaner, hotter fire

Repairs

We handle the practical fixes that keep your fire safe and drawing well. From a rusted cowl or cap to worn firebricks, baffles and door seals, we sort the common repairs on the spot where we can — and give you honest, no-pressure advice on anything bigger.

  • Cowl and rain-cap repair or replacement
  • Firebricks, baffles and grates replaced
  • Door glass, rope and seals renewed for a tight seal
  • Flashing and minor weather-seal fixes
  • Honest advice and referrals for larger jobs

Service FAQs

Good to know before we visit

A standard wood burner or open-fire sweep usually takes 30–60 minutes, depending on access and how much build-up there is. If we’re also doing a full safety audit or burner clean, allow a little longer. We’ll give you a clear idea when you book.

Just don’t light the fire for a few hours beforehand so the flue is cool, and clear a little space around the hearth. We bring our own drop-sheets and equipment and tidy up after ourselves.

Yes. We clean both free-standing and inbuilt wood and log burners — flue, firebox, baffle and glass — and check the door seals and rope while we’re there.
